Former Washington, DC Townhouse Once Owned by Barack Obama Hits Market for $1.29 Million

A historic three-story row house in Washington, DC, where President Barack Obama resided during his tenure as a US senator, has become available for purchase. Priced at $1.279 million, this 2,214-square-foot property consists of two separate units: a one-bedroom, one-bathroom apartment on the ground floor – which Obama called home – and a two-bedroom, one-and-a-half bathroom duplex above. Constructed in 1975, the unassuming brick residence is positioned diagonally from Stanton Park’s eastern border, conveniently close to the United States Capitol.

Obama’s former landlord noted that the apartment served as a “humble space in a convenient location” during the politician’s time in the Senate, spanning from 2005 to his election as President in 2008. The rent for the unit was $1,200 per month, as confirmed by Obama’s lease agreement. Presently, the listing reveals that the unit is being leased for $1,500 monthly.

In a vivid depiction shared with 60 Minutes shortly after his presidential inauguration, Obama humorously remarked, “It had kind of the vintage-college-dorm…pizza, empty-beer-bottle feel to it.” He decided to vacate the premises on the advice of the Secret Service as his presidential campaign intensified.

Nearly two decades after Obama’s residence, it’s conceivable that the first-floor apartment has undergone a revitalization comparable to the duplex above. Listing photos reveal pale pistachio-colored walls and hardwood flooring throughout the upper unit. The second-floor exhibits a compact enclosed kitchen adjoining a breakfast nook, which then transitions into an open-plan area. This layout consists of a dining section that descends to a snug living space, complete with French doors leading to a petite metal balcony that overlooks the communal backyard. Positioned on the third level, the bedrooms offer ample closet space, and at least one room enjoys a park-facing view.
