James Cameron’s Coastal California Paradise: An Enchanting Haven Valued at $33M for the Visionary Filmmaker

If you’ve ever fancied yourself “king of the world,” this massive Santa Barbara mansion could be just what you’re looking for. The Wall Street Journal was the first to announce that the gated residential and agricultural Hollister Ranch enclave on the remote Gaviota coast where James Cameron owns 102 acres is for sale for a whopping $33 million.

Hollister Ranch Realty’s Jeff Kruthers and Village Properties/Forbes Global Properties’ Emily Kellenberger are the listed agents. “Buyers in search of active environmental stewardship and an oasis on the California coast will be richly rewarded”

Just minutes from Drake’s Beach and miles of protected coastline, the Oscar-winning film director and his wife Suzy Amis Cameron paid just over $4.3 million in the late 1990s for the seaside property, which features an 8,000 square foot main house with five bedrooms and seven bathrooms, as well as several ancillary buildings.

The architectural wood-and-glass structure, which dates back more than three decades, has been extensively renovated by the couple during their tenure, including the installation of new Rocky Mountain quartzite floors and the restoration of the original natural wood. The adjacent dining area flows into the eat-in kitchen, which has top-of-the-line Wolf and Sub-Zero appliances as well as bespoke lighting and cabinetry.

The palm tree–lined grounds include a lagoon–style swimming pool and spa, tennis court, and organic gardens, in addition to a lavish master bedroom, twin offices, a movie theater, gaming room, and fitness center. In addition, there are two wells for irrigation and drinking water, a 2,000 square foot guesthouse, a 24,000 square foot barn, a helipad, and off-grid solar and wind power possibilities.

They are selling, the WSJ reports, because the pair is “too dispersed.” The news article states that on their about 10,000 acre plot of land in Saskatchewan, Canada, and their 5,000 acre plot in New Zealand, they are cultivating unique fava bean and plant-based protein hybrids. They have a home in Crested Butte, Colorado, and also maintain a presence in both Los Angeles, near the director’s Manhattan Beach studio space, and Austin, Texas, where he periodically shoots.
