Former Senator Obama’s Townhouse Lists for Nearly $1.3 Million

Washington, D.C., townhouse where former President Barack Obama resided as a senator is for sale for $1.279 million.

“I think the appeal for [Mr.] Obama to live there was its proximity to the U.S. Capitol and Senate and House offices,” said Coldwell Banker Realty selling agent Linda Pettie.

Capitol Hill is less than a mile away. Ms. Pettie said it’s across from Stanton Park and offers cherry blossom-view coffee and brunch.

Mr. Obama resided in a first-floor flat in the townhouse, which had a two-story mansion above it.

Ms. Petite said the upper-level residence’s main floor has an open kitchen with a pantry and French doors to an iron terrace and garden. The third story has two huge closeted bedrooms and off-street parking.

Ms. Pettie noted this mansion is “not extravagant by any means” unlike other Mansion Global houses. However, bragging rights and convenience are significant.

In 2005, Mr. Obama resided in the first-floor flat, according to UrbanTurf (2013). He told “60 Minutes” in 2008 that the area had a “vintage, college-dorm, pizza, empty-bottle feel to it,” and he was chided for being the only senator whose employees had superior D.C. digs.

Former First Lady Michelle Obama visited the apartment but never stayed.

“I saw it long enough to know that I wasn’t going to stay there,” she told “60 Minutes”.

The UrbanTurf story said that the former senator left his first presidential campaign because Secret Service officers recommended him to stay at a hotel to be easier to monitor.

Ms. Pettie said the Washington, D.C., market had remained “stable” this year despite slowing.

“We still have low inventory, but demand is high,” she added. In general, I don’t believe prices have dropped to accept high mortgage rates, but there’s still a lot of purchasing power.”

Bright MLS, which services the mid-Atlantic area, reported a median sales price of $545,000 in the capital in March, down 2% yearly.
