James Cameron’s Coastal California Retreat: An Enchanting $33M Haven for the Visionary Filmmaker

A huge Santa Barbara estate, fit for a “king of the world,” may be yours if you’ve ever had such fantasies. The Wall Street Journal was the first to report that James Cameron was selling his 102-acre estate in the exclusive gated community of Hollister Ranch on the rugged Gaviota coast for a stunning $33 million.

Jeff Kruthers of Hollister Ranch Realty and Emily Kellenberger of Village Properties/Forbes Global Properties are the listed agents. Buyers “looking for active environmental stewardship and a coastal oasis in California”

An 8,000 square foot main house with five bedrooms and seven bathrooms, as well as several ancillary buildings, were purchased by the Oscar-winning film director and his wife Suzy Amis Cameron for just over $4.3 million in the late 1990s. The property is located just minutes from Drake’s Beach and miles of protected coastline.

The pair has made a number of improvements to the almost 30-year-old architectural wood-and-glass building during their time there. These include installing new Rocky Mountain quartzite flooring and restoring the original natural wood. The eat-in kitchen is open to the adjacent dining room and has high-end Wolf and Sub-Zero equipment as well as custom lighting and cabinetry.

The palm tree-lined grounds have a swimming pool and spa in the manner of a tropical lagoon, a tennis court, and organic gardens, in addition to a sumptuous master suite, two separate offices, a home cinema, a game room, and a gym. Moreover, there is a 2,000 square foot guesthouse, a 24,000 square foot barn, a helicopter, and the potential for off-grid solar and wind power.

They are reportedly selling because they are “too dispersed.” The company is reportedly growing special fava bean and plant-based protein hybrids on a 10,000-acre parcel of land in Saskatchewan, Canada, and a 5,000-acre plot in New Zealand. Aside from their permanent residence in Crested Butte, Colorado, the couple also has residences in Los Angeles, close to the director’s Manhattan Beach studio space, and Austin, Texas, where he often films.
