Name of Mount Fuji
Mount Fuji is known in Japan as Fuji-san (富俫山). Fuji’s name has more than one possible explanation. Some people say it comes from the Ainu tongue, which is spoken by Japan’s native people and means “everlasting life.” But linguists say the name comes from the Yamato tongue and refers to Fuchi, the Buddhist fire goddess.
