The Prussian King and Princes of Hohenzollern have lived in Hohenzollern Castle for many generations. It sits proudly almost 900 metres above the Swabian Jura and is fortified with towers and battlements.
King Frederick William IV of Prussia was a bit of a Romanticist when he was king. He loved the arts and felt very nostalgic about the Middle Ages. That’s likely why he hired Friedrich August Stüler, who was one of the best architects in Berlin at the time, to rebuild the castle his family had built. He made a castle like the most ideal knight’s castle from the Middle Ages. It was a little behind the times, but it is still stunningly and incredibly beautiful.
The first stone was laid in 1852, and the rebuilding was finally finished in 1867. There are 140 rooms in the castle. The library, with its beautiful paintings, the King’s bedroom, the family tree room, and the Queen’s room, called the Blue Salon, are some of the most interesting. The gilded coffered ceiling, beautiful marquetry flooring, and pictures of Prussian royals make the interior look beautiful. And for people who don’t care so much about monarchs, the castle has its own brewery that makes a beer called PREUSSENS.
