It is on Kossuth Square on the eastern shore of the Danube in the Pest part of the city. The Hungarian builder Imre Steindl made it in the neo-Gothic style, and it opened in 1902. Since it was finished, it has been Hungary’s biggest building. Budapest was made up of three cities before 1873: Buda, Óbuda, and Pest.

After seven years, the Diet decided to build a new, more appropriate government building to show that the country was in charge. The building was meant to face the Danube. There was an international competition, and Imre Steindl’s plans won. Later, the Ethnographic Museum and the Hungarian Ministry of Agriculture, which face the Parliament Building, were built based on the plans of two other participants.
