The Manuelino-styled Belém Tower (Torre de Belém) was constructed by Portuguese sculptor and architect Francisco de Arruda between 1514 and 1520. UNESCO designated it as a World Heritage Site in 1983.

This tower was built to protect the city on the Tagus River’s northern bank. It was converted into a lighthouse and customs house years later. We advise going to the Jerónimos Monastery the same day because it’s right next door.
