One of the most stunning beaches in the Mediterranean is found at Zlatni Rat Beach near Bol, on the Croatian island of Brac. Because of its beauty and grace, the Zlatni rat has come to represent both Croatia and the town of Bol, and the Croatian government has declared the beach at Zlatni rat to be a geomorphological monument. But it’s more than simply its shape that gives it beauty and distinction. It is bordered by decades-old pine trees that the people planted to provide some natural shade, and it is encircled by crystal clear water that changes color from turquoise blue to dark blue in just 10 to 20 meters.

Less than 2 miles separate the beach from the town of Bol. Many smaller beaches may be found along the wonderful promenade that runs beneath the shade of pine trees. This intriguing 500-meter-long pebble beach has an unusual shape—it resembles a little peninsula that extends into the ocean on both sides, with nearly 900 meters of shoreline. With a total area of more than 20,000 square meters, the beach can easily hold more than 10,000 people.

This beach is interesting because it varies in shape and location according to the wind, tide, and current. Occasionally, the beach’s tip rotates so much that it creates a tiny pool. Although the wind blows every afternoon and there is usually no wind in the mornings, there is one side of the beach where the sea is always calm, making it ideal for families with little children.
