Many people think that Saint Basil’s Cathedral, a church in Moscow’s Red Square, is one of the most famous buildings in all of Russia. In the 1600s, Tsar Ivan the Terrible had the church built so that it could be used as a sacrifice to remember his wins over the Muslim khanates of Astrakhan and Kazan. A few changes happened to Saint Basil’s Cathedral over the next few hundred years. The structure came very close to being destroyed twice while it was still standing. The plans to destroy the church were stopped both times, which is why it is still standing today.
